Peab builds competence center in Skellefteå

Peab has been commissioned to build the Arctic Center of Energy (ACE) in Skellefteå, Sweden. The customer is Skellefteå Municipality and the contract is worth SEK 390 million.

The Arctic Center of Energy will be a world-leading competence center that will accelerate the electrification of society. The competence center will be built on the university campus in Skellefteå, hence the name of the project, Campus ACE.

The project will be certified according to Miljöbyggnad Gold 4.0 and NollCO2, which entails carefully selected materials and requirements for net zero carbon emissions. The building will be constructed with a CLT frame and the project has high ambitions for energy efficiency, sustainability and reuse of a variety of materials.

Solar panels and wind turbines will be placed on the roof and the energy they generate will be stored in a battery storage facility and then used to power the building's central functions in the event of a power outage. Public toilets will be flushed with recycled rainwater.

Reuse will come from local sources such as Skellefteå Hospital, which is also undergoing major renovation and new construction. Windows, interior doors, washbasins, lighting fixtures, stair railings and limestone from existing floors which will be used to make new terrazzo floors are examples of materials that will be reused. Most of the facade will consist of recycled composite material.

"I'm proud that we can contribute with our expertise in sustainable construction and reuse and start work on Campus ACE which will be key in the research on the very important electrification of society," says Susanne Hallberg, Region Manager Peab.

"Our sustainability ambitions as the customer are very high and the goal of this project is to take the next step in sustainable and circular construction," says Kenneth Lindén, Project Manager at Skellefteå Municipality.

The project is a turnkey contract. Construction will begin in June 2024 and expected to be completed in May 2027.

The project will be order registered in the second quarter 2024.
