Peab has been commissioned to build a new school and health center in Karasjok. The customer is Karasjok Municipality and the contract is worth NOK 543 million, approximately SEK 524 million.
The project includes the construction of a new school and health center with a total building area of 12,630 m2. This includes a modern school building, recycling and waste room and health center. The school building will accommodate 240 pupils from grades one to ten, a special education section, a teaching kitchen, a duodji workshop, a volleyball hall, a library and a language center.
The new health center will have functions such as an emergency room, clinic, health center, short-term and long-term wards, home care services, protected units, nursing home apartments and a commercial kitchen.
The architecture and material choices will reflect Sami culture and tradition, including the use of traditional patterns and colors.
"The new school and health center will be directly linked to the change and transition project 'Karasjok of the Future'. This project will not only improve what we can offer in the way of culture, education and health range but also strengthen our Sami identity. We’re confident that Peab will deliver a functional and beautiful building that will meet the needs of residents for many years to come," says Svein Somby, Mayor of Karasjok Municipality.
"We’re very pleased to have been awarded this exciting and complex project and look forward to working closely with Karasjok Municipality. This project aligns with our values of contributing to the development of modern facilities for health and education, thereby creating lasting value for the local community. It's also important to us that the Sami culture becomes an integral part of the construction process," says Arild Østgård, Head of Peab's construction operations in Norway.
The project has a strong focus on sustainability. The buildings will be constructed with the insulation capacity and energy consumption of passive houses. Building materials with a low environmental impact will be used and systems for waste minimization and recycling will be created. In addition, green areas will be arranged around the buildings to promote biodiversity and a pleasant environment.
The project is a turnkey contract. Construction is scheduled to start in May 2025 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2027.
The project will be order registered in the first quarter 2025.
